Had to fight with my Sansa tonight and I thought it was bricked.
Did some reading and fiddling, then I went over to Rockbox and read their steps on unbricking. Result? Worked right off the bat.

My short steps for reference:
- Turn the HOLD button ON
- Turn on the unit and hold RECORD until USB Recovery Mode starts
- Plug into USB
- Open the 16MB Drive (My computer)
- Copy the original firmware back to this drive
- Unplug from USB
- Turn the HOLD button OFF
